In Food Distribution, in Portugal, Jerónimo Martins has the leadership with the brands Pingo Doce (supermarkets) and Recheio (cash & carry and food service platforms).
Pingo Doce: the largest supermarket chain
With over 350 stores (mainland Portugal and Madeira) and around 23,000 employees, Pingo Doce is the largest supermarket chain in Portugal and a food specialist. When you enter a Pingo Doce store, you are entering a pleasant and welcoming world of flavours, colours, aromas and freshness, which is the result of a huge investment in product quality. Perishables and the Pingo Doce brand products reflect this stance and have already won a prize position among the Portuguese consumers, who associate them with high quality at an everyday low price.
Recheio: serving independent professionals in the food area.
Serving independent professionals in the food area, Recheio Cash & Carry is Jerónimo Martins's wholesale distribution company for the Portuguese market. While employing around 1,700 people, it currently has 36 cash & carry stores and 2 food service platforms in mainland Portugal, and 1 cash & carry store and 1 food service platform in Madeira.
Biedronka: the largest food retail chain in Poland
Jerónimo Martins Group acquired, in the 1990’s, the retail chain Biedronka, which means in English "ladybird". The so called "operation ladybird" was a success, turning Biedronka into one of the most powerful food retail chains in the country, with an isolated leadership position.
Nowadays with more than 1649 stores, over 28.000 employees and over 500 private label products, Biedronka is Poland's largest food retail chain, and is known to over 90% of Polish consumers.
Manufacturing
Jerónimo Martins is also the largest industrial Group in Portugal manufacturing fast moving consumer goods, through its joint-venture with Unilever in Unilever-Jerónimo Martins company.
The Group began operating in manufacturing in the end of the 1930's, beginning of the 1940's, with the foundation of Fima (Fábrica Imperial de Margarina, Lda.), in 1944, a factory that produces margarines and cooking oils. The crucial point in the expansion of the Group's manufacturing business happened in 1949. In this year a joint venture was set up with Unilever, the Anglo-Dutch multinational. Unilever's products had been sold by Jerónimo Martins's for a long time. In 2007 with the merger of the companies: Fima VG, Lever Elida e Olá, a new company is born, Unilever Jerónimo Martins. With this merger, the shareholding positions are 55% for Unilever and 45% for Jerónimo Martins.
